How to Start a Campus Ministry at Your Church
Starting a campus ministry might seem daunting, but with the right approach and resources, any church can make a significant impact on their local campus.
Step 1: Pray and Cast Vision
Before anything else, pray. Ask God to give you His heart for students and clarity on how to reach them. Then, cast this vision to your church leadership and congregation.
Step 2: Identify Your Campus
Which college or university is nearest to your church? Research the campus:
Student population size
Existing Christian groups
Campus culture and needs
Accessibility and restrictions
Step 3: Build Your Team
You'll need:
A passionate leader or couple
Prayer warriors
College-age volunteers or recent graduates
Church members willing to host students
Step 4: Start Simple
Don't try to do everything at once. Begin with:
Weekly Bible study or small group
Monthly social events
Prayer walks on campus
One-on-one discipleship
Step 5: Connect with Campus Resources
Reach out to:
Campus chaplains or religious life offices
Existing Christian organizations
Student affairs departments
Other churches doing campus work
Step 6: Measure and Adjust
Regularly evaluate what's working and what isn't. Be willing to adapt your approach based on student feedback and participation.
